Resort fees
Most Strip hotels add a nightly resort fee on top of the room rate, often $40 or more per night. Always compare the total price including fees and taxes.
Tipping
Tipping is expected: around 18–20% at restaurants and bars, a few dollars per bag for bellhops, and a few dollars per night for housekeeping. Dealers are often tipped by players who are winning.
Smoking
Smoking is still allowed in many Las Vegas casinos. If that bothers you, consider smoke-free options like Park MGM, NoMad Las Vegas, Vdara Hotel & Spa or the Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas.
Distances
Hotels are huge and the Strip is long. A walk "next door" can take 15 minutes. Wear comfortable shoes and use the Monorail and trams.
ID and age
The legal age to gamble and drink is 21. Carry photo ID at all times; you'll be asked for it at casinos, bars and some shows.
Water and sun
The desert is dry. Drink plenty of water even in cooler months, especially on day trips.
Casino basics
You don't need to gamble to enjoy a resort, but if you do, set a budget before you sit down. Table minimums rise on busy weekends like race week, and lower-limit tables are easier to find Downtown and at North Strip and Off-Strip resorts. Join the free loyalty program of the resort you're staying at; points can reduce resort fees, food and show tickets.
Eating and drinking
Las Vegas has restaurants from celebrity chefs alongside excellent food halls and off-Strip neighbourhood spots. Book popular restaurants early for race weekend. Food halls such as Eataly at Park MGM and Famous Foods Street Eats at Resorts World Las Vegas are good for quick, cheaper meals between sightseeing and sessions.
Shows
Las Vegas shows run most nights but almost all have dark days. If you want to see something like O by Cirque du Soleil or The Wizard of Oz at Sphere during race week, book in advance and pick a night or early slot that doesn't clash with your sessions. Browse all shows.
Safety
The Strip is busy and well-patrolled, but keep an eye on your belongings in crowds, particularly on race nights and at the Fremont Street Experience.
