Lake Mead is the reservoir formed by Hoover Dam and the centerpiece of a national recreation area offering boating, kayaking, hiking and scenic drives.

Highlights

  • Boat tours and kayak rentals
  • Historic Railroad Trail through tunnels
  • Lakeshore scenic drive
  • Swimming beaches

About this area

Within an hour of the Strip you can hike red-rock canyons, stand on top of Hoover Dam or kayak on Lake Mead. November is one of the best months for the desert.

Fitting it into race week

Track sessions run in the evening, so daytime is free for sightseeing. Allow extra travel time near the Strip on track nights because of road closures.

Tips

  • The Historic Railroad Trail is flat and easy.
  • Bring sun protection; there's little shade.
