Red Rock Canyon is a stunning desert landscape of red and cream sandstone just west of the city, with a 13-mile scenic drive and dozens of hiking trails.

Highlights

  • 13-mile one-way scenic loop
  • Calico Hills and Calico Tanks hikes
  • Rock climbing and petroglyphs
  • Visitor center with exhibits

About this area

Within an hour of the Strip you can hike red-rock canyons, stand on top of Hoover Dam or kayak on Lake Mead. November is one of the best months for the desert.

Fitting it into race week

Track sessions run in the evening, so daytime is free for sightseeing. Allow extra travel time near the Strip on track nights because of road closures.

Tips

  • Timed-entry reservations are required for the scenic drive during the busy season (roughly October–May).
  • November is ideal hiking weather.
